Eclipse is considered as a very important celestial event in the fields of both astrology and science. It is believed that planetary movements not only nature but also the lives of people. What is an Eclipse? An Eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when celestial bodies come in front of each other and cover the part of the other. There are two types of eclipses that are observed, the Lunar and the Solar eclipse. Solar eclipse is observed when the moon comes between earth and the sun, and the shadow of the moon falls on the earth. In case of Lunar eclipse, it occurs when the earth comes between the Sun and the Mood and its shadow falls on the moon. Below is the table consisting information about the Lunar and Solar eclipses that are going to occur in the year 2020.

Solar eclipses are of three types:

  • Full Solar Eclipse: It is observed when the Sun gets entirely covered by the Moon.
  • Partial Solar Eclipse: It is observed when the Sun is partially covered by the Moon.
  • Annular Solar Eclipse: Also known as the Diamond ring, it is observed when the Moon covers just the middle part of the Sun and creates a ring like appearance.

The timings given in the above table are as per IST (Indian Standard Time) Since the Vedic Astrology rejects Penumbral Lunar Eclipse as valid eclipse, therefore even though these eclipses will be observed in India, their Sutak period will be observed. There are three types of Lunar eclipses:

  • Full Lunar Eclipse
  • Partial Lunar Eclipse
  • Penumbral Lunar Eclipse (In this type, the Moon passes through the Penumbra of the Earth and creates a fragmented image due to the rays of the Sun.)

Eclipse in Vedic Astrology

Hindu Vedic Astrology tells us that a person’s traits, Karma, deeds and thoughts can be identified and predicted on the basis of planetary positions, transits and Nakshatras in the person’s Kundli or birth chart. Among other celestial bodies, the Sun and the Moon are considered the most significant ones.

Mantras to be chanted during Eclipse

Different mantras are supposed to work in order to eliminate the risk of any possible harm. “तमोमय महाभीम सोमसूर्यविमर्दन। हेमताराप्रदानेन मम शान्तिप्रदो भव॥१॥” “tamomaya mahābhīma somasūryavimardana। hematārāpradānena mama śāntiprado bhava॥1॥” “विधुन्तुद नमस्तुभ्यं सिंहिकानन्दनाच्युत। दानेनानेन नागस्य रक्ष मां वेधजाद्भयात्॥२॥” “vidhuntuda namastubhyaṃ siṃhikānandanācyuta। dānenānena nāgasya rakṣa māṃ vedhajādbhayāt॥2॥”

  • Mantra To Chant During Solar Eclipse
    "ॐ आदित्याय विदमहे दिवाकराय धीमहि तन्न: सूर्य: प्रचोदयात" "oṃ ādityāya vidamahe divākarāya dhīmahi tanna: sūrya: pracodayāta"
  • Mantra To Chant During Lunar Eclipse
    “ॐ क्षीरपुत्राय विद्महे अमृत तत्वाय धीमहि तन्नो चन्द्रः प्रचोदयात्” “oṃ kṣīraputrāya vidmahe amṛta tatvāya dhīmahi tanno candraḥ pracodayāt”
  • Eclipse in Mythology

    According to the Mythology, during the sea churning by the Gods and Demons, Amrit or Nectar came out, after this, the Gods tried to stop the Demons from taking away the Amrit, but they failed to do so. After this, Gods went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman, I order to woo the demons and succeeded in it. Mohini took the Nectar from the Demons and distributed it among the Gods. But, one of the Demons called Svarbhanu understood this trick of Lord Vishnu and sneaked in the line of Gods and consumed the Nectar of life. After this, Lord Surya and Lord Chandra revealed this to Vishnu and he sent his Sudarshan Chakra to kill Svarbhanu. Vishnu succeeded in separating Svarbhanu’s head from his torso but since by that time he was immortal, he turned two different parts and his head and torso were called Rahu and Ketu respectively. It is belived that upto this day, Rahu and Ketu prove to be a curse to the Sun and Moon.

    What to and What not to do in Sutak Period

    AThe inauspicious time period before and after after the eclipses, both the Lunar and the Solar is called Sutak period. It is believed that any new task started during Sutak period always end up in a failure. Sutak periods are different in both the cases. In case of Solar eclipse, the Sutak period begins 4 pahars or 12 hours before the main event of eclipse, while in the case of Lunar eclipse, it begins 3 pahars before the eclipse which is 9 hours.

    Eclipse in Mythology

    Here is a list of suggested Do’s and Don’ts of Sutak Period-

    • Do not eat anything during the eclipse. This rule is only for fit and healthy adults.
    • Do not use any kind of knife or scissor.
    • Do not touch holy idols.
    • It is prohibited to comb hair, brush teeth, excrete or to get involved in any kind of sensual activities during this period.
    • It is advised to put Tulsi leaves in food items before the start of the eclipse.

    Some precautions for Pregnant Women During Eclipse

    It is strongly advised to pregnant women to not use stitching tools, knives, scissors and any other sharp tool during this Sutak period and Eclipse. It is also advised to stay inside the house and to not look directly towards the phenomena. It is said that doing so can make the child mentally physically challenged, It is also believed that irresponsible behavior during Sutak and Eclipse can cause miscarriage.
